Rooted in Purpose (and a Bit of Sass): Savoy Hotel Manila’s Bold Sustainability Journey Under GM Den Navarro | Monchster Chronicles

Savoy Hotel Manila, sustainability isn’t just a checkbox; it’s a lifestyle choice, a daily habit, and sometimes even a team sport. Since 2021, under the sharp and spirited leadership of General Manager Den Navarro, and with eco-warrior lieutenants like Karlo Evangelista and the whole Savoy squad in tow, the hotel has embraced a refreshingly human, heartfelt, and humorous take on responsible tourism. Anchored on three solid pillars, People, Planet, and Business, Savoy’s mission is simple: leave the world better, brighter, and with a bit more flair.

Sustainability starts with people, and Savoy believes in showing up, not just with donations, but with heart, hustle, and hospitality. In 2023, the hotel joined hands with the Pangarap Foundation and the Philippine Institute for the Deaf, proving that inclusion isn’t just a trend, it’s a tradition. They also rolled up their sleeves for Brigada Eskwela at Villamor Airbase Elementary School, because painting classrooms and planting hope never go out of style.

Come 2024, Savoy partnered with food rescue champions Scholars of Sustenance (SOS), fighting food waste one delicious surplus at a time. Who knew leftovers could save lives?

And inside the hotel? The staff aren’t just slaying service, they’re growing herbs, walking runways in trash-to-trend fashion, and solving sustainability puzzles in an eco-themed Amazing Race called “We Race for Green.” Throw in a Christmas decoration contest judged more seriously than a Miss Universe Q&A, and you’ve got a workplace where green isn’t just a color, it’s a vibe.

Savoy Hotel Manila’s commitment to the environment is as real as the 456 kilos of herbs and veggies they've grown since 2022 through their hybrid farming program. That’s a lot of pesto potential, and it’s all local, reducing carbon emissions and grocery bills.

Their “Waste We Can” campaign isn’t just catchy, it’s effective. Between 2022 and 2024, they rerouted 2.5 tons of recyclables away from landfills. That's basically turning trash into treasure (or at least into someone else’s reusable tote bag).

Meanwhile, the in-room “Green Program” encourages guests to reuse towels and linens, not just to save the planet, but maybe also to skip the awkward moment when you can’t remember where housekeeping left your pajamas.

By 2025, the hotel will be flipping the switch to renewable energy via MPOWER. Savoy’s basically saying, “Dear fossil fuels, it’s not us-it’s definitely you.”

Savoy isn’t just walking the sustainability talk; it’s strutting it down the runway. In 2022, it signed the Glasgow Declaration for Climate Action in Tourism, earning it serious global cred and a front-row seat in the climate conversation. The “Badge of Honor” it received from UNEP, DOT, and PCEPSDI wasn’t just shiny, it was proof that doing business responsibly can still come with applause.

By 2023, the hotel was bagging more than compliments. It received the UK’s “Guardians of the Grub” badge (yes, that’s a real thing) for its food waste reduction smarts and became a Green Destinations-certified hotel. The cherry on top? Being named a Top 6 Finalist at ITB Berlin 2024’s Green Destinations Story Awards. Not bad for a hotel that started with a dream and a salad spinner.

In 2024, they clinched the title of “Eco Warrior Champion” in the Trash to Cash initiative, because who says saving the planet can’t come with a trophy? And if that weren’t enough, they were the only hotel representing the Philippines in a sustainability study mission to Taiwan. Who says hospitality can’t lead the charge?

Homegrown Hospitality with Heart (and a Few Herbs on the Side)

Part of Megaworld Hotels and Resorts, the largest homegrown hotel operator in the Philippines, Savoy Hotel Manila is proudly Pinoy and even prouder of its Sampaguita service. Located just 350 meters from NAIA Terminal 3, the hotel is a layover-lover’s dream, with easy access to Terminals 1 and 2 via the skyway (read: no more mad airport dashes).

Situated in Newport City, it’s surrounded by more cafés, restaurants, and shops than you can count on one hand. And with 684 comfy, colorful rooms, you can bet Savoy knows how to mix business, leisure, and a splash of eco-flair, without ever skimping on the Wi-Fi or the welcome drink.

Poolside

From community partnerships to global podiums, Savoy Hotel Manila is proving that sustainability isn’t about sacrifice, it’s about smart, soulful choices that ripple outward. And as their journey continues to unfold, one thing is clear: this hotel isn’t just changing the game, it’s rewriting the rules with purpose, passion, and just the right amount of panache.
